There are many good sites to see and photograph geese but my favourites would be the Lauwersmeer and the southern shore of The Haringvliet for Barnacle Geese, the old polders close to Strijen for Lesser Whitefronted Geese and the entire former island of Schouwen for all three species of brent geese. All these sites host other species of wildfowl as well and are worth a visit for more than just geese. In autumn and the first part of winter the entire population of Pinkfooted Geese from Spitzbergen come to the north of the Netherlands via Denmark. During late autumn they are locally common in the north of the country but from mid December almost all these birds move to western Belgium before flying back to Denmark in January. More webbed feet but with the extra attraction of wintering Twite, Shorelark and Snow Buntings can be found on the islands to the north of the Waddensea.

Of these Texel is the best known and the easiest to reach but my personal favourite is Schiermonnikoog in the extreme northeast. Visitors are not allowed  to take their cars to the island making it one of the quitest places in the Netherlands. At the other end of the country lies the Brouwersdam, this dam in the southwest of the country connects the former islands of Goeree and Schouwen. The best time to visit this site is late autumn and winter when large numbers of seaduck and divers can be seen on the sea on the western side of the dam. Record counts have included up to 60 long-tailed Ducks and well over 400 Red-throated Divers. This dam also holds small numbers of wintering waders such as Purple Sandpipers.

4- How many species of bird are found in Holland?

Of the 498 different species that have occurred in The Netherlands roughly 310 can be seen every year, the rest are much rarer!
